IBM Hackathon 2.0 – Everyone’s a winner!

On the weekend from November 17th until November 19th, the IBM Hackathon 2.0 took place on the top level of the IBM Watson IoT building in Munich. After a successful first round in Vienna in March this year, this event was organised for a second time by IBM and – an IBM Company. 60 employees from IBM and its acquisitions and Aperto from four different countries met up to develop innovative ideas for two real business cases. Potential candidates were also invited to show how they work and in turn get to know their potential future teams.
Two clients from IBM and were onsite to present business challenges regarding their digital future. After an initial warm-up, specific sessions took place to get into the flow and methods of Hackathons and to learn more about the challenges of the companies as well as the technologies such as IBM Watson Services out of IBM Bluemix. Almost 40 initial ideas were pitched in the first rounds. Eventually, teams worked on the 11 best ideas over the weekend. Participants had 48 hours until Sunday noon to establish the idea, develop a prototype and define a business plan. The teams were continuously coached by a range of industry and technology experts as well as influencers and mentors. A lot of creative work, coding, calculating, giving up and getting back on the track filled days and nights! Luckily, there was always enough food, energy drinks, coffee and beer available to get through and hang on.
On Sunday, the final concepts were presented in the final pitching session and the jury was quite astonished by the number of great ideas. Every team had the chance to present their idea within 4 minutes (sharp!), followed by a 3-minute Q&A. The jury had a hard time deciding on the final winners, as the quality of every single project was very high. They finally awarded 4 prizes for some great ideas.
In the end, every single participant was a winner! All had the opportunity to make new contacts, share knowledge, think outside the box and grow together with the extended IBM iX family!
After the first hackathon in March, managed to further develop the initial ideas into assets and even built up an Innovation Library for suchlike innovations that offer a high value for client cases. The ideas from the Hackathon 2.0 will surely generate new additions to the Innovation Library.
